ELL Curriculum

ELL Curriculum

Bristol's English Language Learners' Curriculum was approved in June 2008 by the Bristol Board of Education.

The curriculum was divided into elementary and secondary versions. Both versions contain standards and objectives appropriate for beginner, intermedate, and advanced ELL students.

With the adoption of Common Core State Standards and the utilization of the LAS Links C Assessment (aligned with CCSS), Bristol's ELL Curriculum is currently under revision.

  • At this time, the CT State Dept. of Education (CSDE) has posted the Common Core State Standards English Language Arts and English Language Learner Framework "Connections" for the grade levels K - 12.

Common Core ELL Frameworks

Guiding principles will be utilized from the following resources:

1. The Framework for English Language Proficiency Development Standards corresponding to the CCSS the Next Generation Science Standards.

In the ELPD Framework (referenced above), each language practice is associated with a set of analytical tasks or cognitive activities, that students need to master. As students progress in their academic careers. they add new tasks to the ones they have already learned. As language learners advance in their language proficiency, they expand the ways in which they use language to engage in these tasks. (taken from WIDA Focus on ELA)

To enhance language acquisition, our ELL teachers utilize support materials from student classrooms, literacy libraries Hampton-Brown's AVENUES program at the elementary level, and Hampton-Brown's High Point and Edges series at the secondary levels.
