What's Happening

Below is a list of JUST A FEW of this year's gifted happenings across our district!

  • Creative Writing Workshops -UCONN professor, poet and author  Dr. Ken Cormier returns to conduct inspiring workshops with students from across the district at all grade levels. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their creations during open mic showcases.
  • Invention Convention-BPS continues to excel as our young inventors gain statewide and national attention for their innovative approaches to solving problems in this inspiring nationwide program.
  • Stretching the Mind- Bristol Central gifted coach Gale Dickau continues to merge various disciplines, as she combines Dr. Cormier's creative writing workshop with a Bushnell visit to experience an evening with  renowned astrophysicist and author Neil deGrasse Tyson. 
  • Model UN-John Stavens and his Bristol Eastern students continue to excel and enjoy this life changing experience.  Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and its other multilateral bodies where students perform an ambassador role while debating topics such as gender equality, climate action, global health, and more.
  • Chess Club - Teams will be formed at all elementary and middle schools, as students learn the strategies and nuances of chess, culminating in a districtwide championship tournament!
  • Mock Trial - In conjunction with the CT Bar Association and Civics First, middle school students will learn about the legal system through this innovative program that leads them to a full trial process!
  • Odyssey of the Mind -Students in several district schools will have the opportunity to put their teamwork to the test in this worldwide problem solving challenge.
  • National History Day - BPS Scholars will tackle this year's theme of Frontiers in History, putting their research to the test in this challenging local, state and national competition.
